Summer 2021 in Brighton. We have been back housesitting in Brighton for the last month or so. It has been good to spend time with our cat pals and return to some sense of normality. Although many restrictions have been eased here in England, travelling abroad is fraught with complications. The government has devised a green light system in the form of a list of countries that they have decided it is ok to travel to. Having said that, most of the countries that are on the list have their own restrictions. Many won’t let visitors in anyway or have lengthy quarantine requirements.
A few weeks ago, we had a housesit lined up, but sadly it was cancelled. The people who we were due to housesit for had booked to go to Portugal. Originally on the green light list, Portugal was then taken off after only a couple of weeks. Disappointment all round!
Right now, we are split between Brighton and Eastbourne. With housesitting opportunities patchy and unpredictable, we are taking it a week at a time. We were lucky enough to find time to go to Blackberry Woods for a camping trip which we thoroughly enjoyed. It was so good to hike through the countryside, pitch our tent in a shady glade and sit around the campfire in the evenings. Sometimes a short getaway can make a world of difference. Furthermore, it didn’t rain!
Summer Vibes in Brighton
Brighton is slowly coming back to life. Many of the restaurants have outside seating and it’s been good to see people enjoying al fresco dining. A pared down, socially distanced version of Brighton Festival has just taken place with music, dance and comedy. At last, street performances have also returned to Brighton giving the city fresh energy. Furthermore, the Lady Boys of Bangkok returned to Brighton after missing their annual stint in the city last year. After over a year of being suspended in a strange state of abandonment, Brighton is, like many cities of the world, bouncing back.
A Picnic in the Park
The weather hasn’t been in the same league as it was last year during lockdown. Indeed, 2020 felt like a never-ending summer – pretty much every day from March to October was warm and sunny. This spring, we planned a few picnics in local parks to catch up with friends. However, on each occasion, it poured with rain and consequently they were all cancelled except for one!
Much as we can’t wait to travel again, long-term travel abroad is definitely on hold at the moment, as we attempt to re-establish ourselves post-pandemic Although things are a little quiet for us right now, we still have big plans and dreams. We’d love to do a road trip in the USA (although it’s a little worrying to hear about the back-to-back traffic jams in the national parks right now!) We also have Georgia, Egypt, Turkey and Greece on the radar and we would love to do the Fisherman’s Trail along the Portuguese coast. Chile is pretty high on the wish list, and it goes without saying, that Mexico is always a temptation! When the time comes, being free to travel wherever we want to in the world will certainly be something that we won’t take for granted again!
Exploring our Backyard
We are also hoping to buy a car (or even better, a camper van!) so that we can take some more local adventures. Perhaps we will head to Scotland or other places in the UK that we haven’t been to before. It’s difficult to believe that it has been about nineteen months since we were forced to return from Colombia as the world began to shut down. Hopefully, it won’t be long before we are free to roam again!
